02. The Problem

Many people want to eat healthier but struggle with:

  • Accessibility: Finding recipes that align with specific diets such as vegan, vegetarian, or health-focused plans

  • Motivation: Choosing home-cooked meals over convenient takeout

  • Complexity: Feeling overwhelmed by meal planning, recipe selection, and preparation

Existing recipe apps often offered extensive content but lacked personalization and clarity, making healthy cooking feel like work rather than a habit.03. Design Process & Approach

03. Design Process & Approach

Discovery & Research

I conducted user interviews and surveys to understand why people avoid cooking at home. Common themes included time constraints, decision fatigue, and difficulty finding recipes that fit both lifestyle and health goals.

A competitive analysis of existing recipe and meal-planning apps revealed gaps in personalization, onboarding clarity, and overall ease of navigation—opportunities Flavorfolio could address.

Design Principles

The experience was guided by three core principles:

  • Reduce friction in meal discovery and planning

  • Personalize content to feel supportive rather than prescriptive

  • Create a visually inviting interface that encourages daily use

Design Execution

Key design decisions included:

  • A streamlined onboarding flow to capture dietary preferences and goals early

  • Personalized recipe recommendations tailored to user inputs

  • Clear visual hierarchy and intuitive navigation to reduce cognitive load

  • A bright, friendly visual system that makes healthy eating feel enjoyable

Low- and high-fidelity prototypes were created to validate flows and refine interaction details.

04. Testing & Iteration

Usability testing focused on navigation clarity, recipe relevance, and onboarding simplicity. Feedback led to:

  • Simplified onboarding steps

  • Improved recipe categorization and search

  • Refinements to layout and content density

To further support motivation, features such as progress tracking and shareable achievements were introduced to encourage consistency and positive reinforcement.

05. Solution & Outcome

Results
  • Users reported cooking at home more frequently due to personalized recommendations

  • Positive feedback highlighted the app’s clean design and ease of use

  • Engagement was strongest around personalized meal planning and discovery features

Future Considerations
  • Community features for sharing recipes and progress

  • Advanced filters for time, ingredients, and cooking skill level

  • Expanded personalization for long-term habit building
